Professional Tax Registration – All You Need to Know

Professional Tax (P-tax) is imposed by the State Government on individuals or entities practising a profession, trade or calling. While each state has its own set of laws regarding professional tax, individuals and entities must obtain a Professional Tax Enrollment Certificate (PTEC) and/or Professional Tax Registration Certificate (PTRC). Many states and union territories now offer online professional tax registration or ‘P tax registration’.

Who Pays and How Much?

Professional tax is levied on individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUF), companies, cooperative societies or associations. Professionals such as lawyers, doctors, chartered accountants, architects, etc are liable to pay a professional tax on their income. For salaried individuals, the employer must deduct professional tax from their monthly income, while self-employed individuals need to pay P-tax on their own to the state government.

The tax liability varies from state to state, as some states and union territories do not impose professional tax. The amount to be paid in states and UTs that levy the tax is based on the income of the professional. While tax rates vary between different states and union territories, there is a cap or maximum limit of Rs 2,500 per annum.

Professional Tax Registration Certificate

A business or entity that has salaried employees on its payroll must obtain a Professional Tax Registration Certificate or PTRC. The PTRC allows a company to deduct professional tax from the salary of employees and submit it at the time of filing returns. A company must apply for PTRC within 30 days of hiring an employee.
